EDUCATION INFORMATION SOCIETY OF NIGERIA (EISON) Education is Power CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE ON BEHALF OF OUR MOTHER, DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR IBIYEMI OLATUNJI-BELLO, mni, NPOM Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU) CONGRATULATES PROFESSOR ODION AKHAINE ON THE CONFERMENT OF THE NATIONAL HONOUR AS HERO OF DEMOCRACY The Education Information Society of Nigeria (EISON), on behalf of our mother, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, congratulates Professor Odion Akhaine on his conferment of the prestigious National Honour of Hero of Democracy by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, during the June 12 Democracy Day celebration. Professor Odion Akhaine, a Professor of Political Science in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Lagos State University, is one of Nigeria's foremost pro-democracy activists and a frontline leader in the struggle against military dictatorship. He served at various times as: General Secretary, Campaign for Democracy (CD) Joint Secretary, United Action for Democracy (UAD) General Secretary, United Action for Democracy (UAD) Through these positions, he played pivotal roles in the struggle for democratic governance, constitutionalism, human rights, and the defence of civil liberties in Nigeria. A TRUE HERO OF DEMOCRACY In recognition of his unwavering commitment to democracy and human rights, Professor Akhaine endured illegal incarceration and solitary confinement under the military regime of General Sani Abacha between 1995 and 1996. His courage and sacrifice earned him the designation of Prisoner of Conscience by Amnesty International in 1995. Over the years, his contributions to democracy, constitutionalism, and human rights have attracted national and international recognition. He currently serves as: Chairman, Board of Trustees, Centre for Constitutionalism and Demilitarisation Member of Governing Councils and Boards of several reputable institutions and non-governmental organisations MESSAGE FROM EISON This national honour is a fitting recognition of Professor Akhaine's enduring legacy, patriotism, courage, resilience, integrity, and invaluable contributions to the enthronement and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria. His life remains a shining example of sacrifice, commitment to justice, and dedication to nation-building. The Education Information Society of Nigeria joins the Lagos State University community in celebrating this well-deserved recognition and wishes Professor Odion Akhaine continued good health, greater accomplishments, and many more years of impactful service to humanity and the nation.
